An invaluable diagnostic tool, endoscopy is an alternative to surgery in many cases for obtaining visual imaging of the GI tract, collecting samples for biopsy and histopathology and in some cases, removing ingested foreign bodies from the throat or stomach.  With the animal anesthetized, a camera probe is passed down the throat to visualize the inside of the GI tract.  Various smaller probes can then be passed through the main probe to take tissue samples or grab and remove ingested foreign bodies without the many downsides of traditional exploratory surgery.
